Chinese Brass Dragon Vase, Archaistic Style w/ Wanli Mark, 24cm c.1900

A striking Chinese brass vase cast in archaistic Ming style, featuring a powerful five-clawed dragon in high relief coiling around the neck in pursuit of a flaming pearl. The body is engraved with thunder-scroll clouds, floral sprays, and applied medallions. The base bears a raised six-character Wanli reign mark (大明萬曆年製), using the character 卍 as a traditional shorthand for 萬.

This vessel was sand-cast in southern China—likely Guangdong or Tianjin—circa 1890–1920, during the late-Qing to early-Republic export boom. Brassware from this period often emulated imperial Ming bronzes, with artisans highlighting the inscriptions in gilt to enhance their appeal for Western collectors.

The design closely echoes authentic Wanli court motifs, but the brass alloy, exuberant figural appliqué, and visible casting seams identify it as a revival piece from the turn of the 20ᵗʰ century. Such vases were marketed in early English-language export catalogues as “Chinese Temple Vases, Ming Design”, and are today prized for their bold sculptural presence and decorative power.

Minor casting fissures, natural verdigris deposits, and old knocks attest to age and handling. A small hole is present on the shoulder (see last photo).
